Long ago, in the time before the People hid themselves, humans were not the only ones to speak and sing and feast. Back then the People lived as any Man or Woman. Some of them you know, like Mother Moon, or Brother Bear. Still, few of them cared much for the humans that struggled to make their way. One was different. Coyote played amongst the humans. It was a time of ease, and joy for the People, but it was not so easy for Humans. When the seasons turned and fall proceeded the bite of winter Men and Woman who did not have the many gifts of fur, feather or scale that the People did it brought a time of hardship.
Coyote, seeing the humans suffer (he felt) needlessly, he took pity on them and decided to help them. To help them, of course, at the expense of some of the other People, whom he felt were proud and vain and needed once and a while, a proper trick.
See, the Fire Beings kept fire to themselves, high atop The Mountain, fearing that if Man were to ever acquire it, that they would no longer be great enough to be counted amongst the People. This pride irritated Coyote, so he set about sneaking into their camp. The fire people did not see him, or hear him, as his cunning was great, and he stole from their great bonfire a burning brand.
He could not hide the fire, as he fled their camp, and they chased him, throwing fire at his feet. The flames burned his fur, and to this day his children's paws show the mark... but that is another story.
See, Coyote was successful. He brought fire to man, and with it all the greatness that man has ever achieved. From the glint of gold, to fire in the sky that carried little Man to visit Mother Moon.

All of that was long ago. And Men and Women have become as great as many of the Old People. Coyote, however, has not forgotten his tricks. Gifts he gives, but never without a price. Tricks he plays, but never without a lesson. In Man and Woman’s pride they have forgotten the gifts of Coyote, so he’s come back. A chef, Ko’ brings some particular gifts. In their gluttony they feast but do not share. In their vanity, they forget his thanks... Seven sins, they count, and Coyote counts them too, and brings seven gifts. Seven flavors for seven sins, each to tempt, to burn. His newest gifts, the fire of wrath, the sensuality of lust, and every sin between. They tempt, and teach lessons of culinary decadence. But beware, they will burn you if you’re not careful!

Coyote’s gifts are like that.
